Monique Ryan, MS, RDN, LDN, CSSD, C-EP, CLT is a nationally known nutrition expert based in the Chicagoland area. Practicing as a dietitian/nutritionist since, 1984, she has been owner of Personal Nutrition Designs, LLC since 1992, and now has a diverse, yet highly specialized practice. Monique has counseled thousands of clients in the areas of sports nutrition, eating disorder recovery, gastrointestinal disorders, weight management, food sensitivities and allergies, women’s health, and risk factor management. Monique’s clients are provided with cutting edge nutrition advice developed from evidence based research that is translated into practical and workable nutrition plans. Her programs also have a strong emphasis on ongoing follow-up and support programming tailored to the individual’s nutrition goals in order to provide the most effective outcomes.
In addition to providing these personalized programs, Monique is a seasoned presenter and has delivered hundreds of presentations to corporations, professional associations, coach and athletics groups, community organizations, and sports/athletic teams and clubs. She regularly presents across the United States and has presented in Canada, Brazil, Australia, and Thailand. Some recent presentations have included USA Triathlon: Art and Science of Coaching, Medicine in Cycling, San Diego Triathlon Club, Texas Dietetic Association, Chicago Area Runner’s Association Super Clinic, the Timex Multisport Team, the Team Type 1 Training Camp, and the American College of Sports Medicine. Monique has competed in the sports of road cycling and mountain biking and currently competes in the sport of triathlon and is a six time Ironman 70.3 finisher.
Monique is the author of several sports nutrition books, including the bestselling, Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes (VeloPress), released in it’s third edition in 2012. She has also authored Performance Nutrition for Team Sports, Performance Nutrition for Winter Sports, and Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition. She is the author of numerous published print and online articles including VeloNews, Inside Triathlon, Runner’s World, Outside, Oxygen, Men’s Journal, eatright.org, kidseatright.org, Her Sports, Triathlete, and Women’s Sports & Fitness.
In addition to being a busy author, Monique is often on the other side of the media world and for over two decades has been frequently sought out for her expert opinion. She has been quoted in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, US News and World Report, Men’s Health, Runner’s World, Triathlete, Running Times, Competitor, Bicycling, Oxygen, and ABC Channel News. She has appeared on the NBC, WGN, ABC, CBS, CLTV, and FOX TV news.
Monique is a registered dietitian nutritionist (R.D.N.) and a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND, formerly the American Dietetic Association). She is a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) in the state of Illinois. Monique is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (C.S.S.D.), and has a Certificate of Training in Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management through the Academy. Monique is a member of several dietitian practice groups within the Academy, including Sports Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN), Dietitians in Functional Medicine, and Nutrition Entrepreneurs. Monique is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (C-EP). Monique is also a Certified LEAP therapist, a program that identifies food sensitivities and outlines a highly personalized and effective anti-inflammatory /oligo-antigenic diet.
Monique has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics (1984) with a minor in chemistry from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and completed a coordinated dietetics program that incorporated clinical training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Monique was awarded the NIU Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Health and Human Sciences in 2010. She has a Master of Science (M.S) degree in Nutrition with an emphasis on marketing and communications from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (2002), from which she was given the Academic Excellence Award.
Monique has competed in the sports of mountain biking, road racing, and triathlon. She is a six time Ironman 70.3 finisher and is currently training for her seventh 70.3.
